Hi! I’m Natalie, aka @curlsbythecoast, and I want to help you bring out the best of your natural hair texture!
I’ve had curly hair my whole life (and I do live by the coast – in Plymouth, UK). Like many people, I had no idea what to do with my hair except tie it up or straighten it.
I first encountered the Curly Girl Method back in 2011, although I don’t follow it now, I did remember some key tips, like switching to a sulphate-free shampoo and using a satin pillowcase at night.
Little did I know that I was still making a lot of mistakes and missing out on ways to really bring out my curl definition.
I was in a constant battle to tame the frizz – I would tie it up in a ponytail while it was wet, and flatten my roots with bobby pins to make it “neater”.
The trouble was, constantly bobby-pinning the front of my hair was leading to a lot of breakage, leading to shorter broken hairs that looked even MORE like frizz…I found it very frustrating.
I guess in the end I thought: “why am I constantly fighting my hair?” and in 2020 started to once again look into curly haircare – this time for fine hair, like mine! I learnt a lot of tips and techniques that made a huge difference, and in 2021 started an Instagram account where I could document my progress and share the tips I’d learnt.
This has now blown up into a community of over 40,000 followers! And I wanted to extend my tips into a blog, so that I could share some tips in more detail and provide a different way for you to refer to the info you need.
I hope you find this blog helpful! Do follow me on Instagram @curlsbythecoast, where I put out new posts 3 times a week. 😄
